  • Resumen
    • The thesis "Barcelona in the spotlight. Readings of the city" propases an overview of the city derived from the process of architectural design. lt propases to decipher the concept of a city which exists implicitly in the buildings sketches in the urban context. The image of the city shown in architectural drawings is not an exact copy of reality rather it expresses the particular way in which it is being perceived. The central hypothesis, is an analysis of the "Purposeful look" that which the architect chieves during the project when he or she perceives, understands and transforms the city not from the perspective of the town planning but from the conception of a specific building: the project outline revealing an idea of what city is. In parallel, the view of the city is investigated from different angles: readings from the theory of perception and urban analysis, the city as it is filmed; the city as it is drawn. A repertoire of ways of seeing is constructed with which to address the strictly architectural part of the the thesis. The study of the "purposeful look" will display the tools available to the architect with which to express his or her concept of the city; will examine the concept of the city implicit within each image and, finally, will explain the evolution over time of the distinct viewpoints of different architects. In specific response to the questions raised the city of Barcelona is presented as an individual case study. Large scale urban transformations took place in the city of Barcelona during a relatively short time frame. To narrow down the investigation this study will focus on the period from 1976, (the date of approval of the Metropolitan General Plan, the beginning of town planning in Barcelona as a newly democratic city ) until 2011 (Overlay look 2.0). lt was decided to confine the analysis of examples exclusively to those from architectural ideas competitions. The specific context of competitions allows for an effective comparison of different ways of seeing. In the competitons, enormously varied visions of the city are advanced in relation to identical locations and programmes. Therefore, through systematic study of these competitions, the necessary tools for tackling this research into the city of Barcelona are to be found. The projects which have been analyzed have aspects in common which may be summarised as nine ideas of the city: "memory city" "permeable city", "public space city", "geometry city" "landscape city ", "fragment city","symbolic city", "collage city" and "reflection city". The representation of these differing cities contains many subtle elements which can be depicted as Matrix of city concepts. This figure allows us to draw columns representing time, rows inserting the different projects of each competition and to ad colors for each type of city concept. In short, Barcelona in the spotlight. Views of the city"brings the concept of "Purposeful look" as a tool of analysis available to the architect to express their idea of the city through drawing and images of the same. This thesis establishes the relationship and evolution between the type of graphical representation, the project design process and the city concept which it is associated.
