  • Resumen
    • Domestic architecture is the nerve centre within which human development takes place. Based on that premise, the evolution of spatial perception and the concept of intimacy in human dwellings throughout history are investigated. In order to improve domestic life, it is necessary to construct a multisensory architecture, although nowadays more value is placed on the visual, it must be specified that touch and sounds stimuli have a great im pact. This thesis focuses on the study of sound behaviour in the context of domestic architecture, considering that architecture creates barriers which modify sound waves and acts like a musical instrument which transforms these sounds giving them a special character, thus creating an acoustic environment which conditions our behaviour. To evaluate this behaviour the analysis begins with the parameters of interior acoustic quality. The special characteristics of bathrooms are examined and possible strategies are proposed to explore further acoustic response guidelines for the architectural environment. The investigation in based on the previous study of the parameters of spatial quality and the intimacy allocated to larger spaces. Furthermore, the initial hypothesis is that for human dwellings, unlike larger spaces, the transmission of sound between adjoining spaces of the dwelling and the exterior is necessary. The proposed parameters aim to evaluate the degrees of contrast of finishes in the dwelling's interior, and the ability of separations from adjoining spaces to filter sound. The proximity of surfaces surrounding the source of sounds and their users will be calculated, given that these will offer the most significant response to sound. This is done to obtain maximum spatial quality and acoustic comfort. These variables will serve as a reference to facilitate interior acoustic improvements and the specification of boundaries between different spaces. The proposal is that the investigation into architectural design and acoustic quality of bathrooms can be applied to other spaces in the home and even within the workplace. Finally, in the development of this thesis a proposal for a door is made based on various experiments. This proposal is made, having analysed the acoustic characteristics of built spaces and the quality required . lt was essential to create an element that acted as an enclosure with sufficient insulation, thus maintaining a certain degree of intimacy. Furthermore the prototype developed should allow the required ventilation for domestic sanitary conditions and assuring a good balance of sound between the interior and exterior space. The objective is, based on the points discussed in this thesis, to contribute to good construction practises so as to achieve a good perception of sound and to improve the quality of built spaces in domestic architecture.
