Characterization of the mangalarga horse population in Brazil

    • Observations on 169228 animals of the Mangalarga Horse Breed Studbook recorded from 1934 to 2003 were used to describe the population structure and genetic variability of this breed. The maximum number of births (12140) was observed in 1991. from the total of 4944 Mangalarga breeders, 70 percent owed no more than twenty horses. The average and maximum number of births for stallion were 23.8 and 1686, respectively. For the mares these numbers were 4.4 and 45. The main foaling months are from September to January (78.5 percent). The total number of founders was of 486, while the effectives numbers of founders (Nf) and ancestors (Na) reached, respectively, 16.1 and 14.45. The effective number of remanescents genomes (Ng) was 7.23 and the average generation interval was 9,49 years.
