This paper addresses some of the central problems facing MT today. It points out a few areas where MT is failing, particularly in regards to the English-Portuguese (E-P) language pair. Finally it discusses the essence of MT evaluation: the linguistic criteria of the correspondence between the input and output languages, with examples on POS ambiguity and cross-language phenomena.
