The historical comparative method as applied to the Romance languages is nowadays being neglected on behalf of more recent issues in linguistics, to the extend that even scholars of Romance linguistics often ignore its principles and are unable to evaluate its final result, namely reconstructed Proto-Romance. In this essay, the elements and techniques implied are analysed, described and explained, in view of a better understanding of their respective contributions to tha goal.
