    Heroes' physical and moral degradation in Sophocles plays both a tragic and a dramatic role. To the pathetic vision of a body in pain is opposed the virile fight of the character to overcome his weakness and recover dignity and honour. In The Women of Trachis, Sophocles displays Herakles' body which not only is undergoing inhuman pain but also having its nature changed. Indeed, wearing the péplos, moaning with a high-pitched voice, he becomes a woman and, impregnated by the Centaur's blood, he is kin to the monsters he has vanquished. Through many theatrical techniques - change of voice, shift from song to dialogue, gestures with Hyllas, his son, moves on stage - Herakles recovers his heroic and virile body as well as his place as head of the family.

    La dégradation physique et morale des héros a, chez Sophocle, une efficacité à la fois tragique et spectaculaire. A la vision pathétique d'un corps souffrant s'oppose la lutte virile du personnage pour surmonter sa faiblesse et retrouver dignité et honneur. Dans Les Trachiniennes, Sophocle montre un corps d'Héraklès non seulement affligé de douleurs inhumaines, mais également changeant de nature. En effet habillé du péplos tissé par Déjanire, gémissant d'une voix aigüe, il devient femme, et imprégné du sang du Centaure, il s'apparente aux monstres qu'il a vaincus. Par tous les moyens théâtraux, jeu entre le masque et le costume, changement de voix, passage du chant au dialogue, gestes avec son fils Hyllas, déplacements, Héraklès reconquiert son corps viril et héroïque ainsi que sa place de chef de famille.
