This article looks at the relationship between film, history, and music in Brazil by focussing on the film O Descobrimento do Brasil (1937), directed by Humberto Mauro, and whose accompanying musical score was composed by Heitor Villa-Lobos. The film formed part of president Getúlio Vargas’ project to utilize mass media and music as means of propaganda (he governed from 1930-1945), and provides an excellent point from which to analyze how music and imagery united to support his ideological project.
