Resumen de The manufacture of aluminium and the rubbish-pickers of Rio: building interlocking narratives

Ralph Levinson

  • Treating the processes of science and its social effects as a series of interlocking narratives enables learners to see science as a system. This article draws on the chemistry of the manufacture of aluminium to illustrate links to social justice, economics, environmental protection and employment. By drawing on stories of the main actors in this process it is possible to discover connections between seemingly disparate events. Examples are given of how these narratives can be used in citizenship and science lessons.
