The purpose of the present work is to analyze the strategies used by a group of 5th grade students to understand the meaning of popular sayings occurring both in the social medium (oral) and written texts.
To understand popular sayings it is necessary to go from understanding the external meaning of the spoken or written words to understanding the internal meaning (subtext).
An analysis was made of the hypotheses or suppositions used by the children in their effort to find the internal meaning of popular sayings.
