• Molière is one of the dramatists who has been most widely translated into Catalan, especially during the first third of the twentieth century. Despite the different purposes of his translators, many of them, with the appropriation of a universal classic, shared the will to re-establish a high quality theatre tradition that was considered to have been interrupted, as well as the wish to create a pattern for literary language suitable for all registers and usages. In short, Molière is a paradigmatic case of the influence that a foreign author can have on the development of a national literature.
