The purpose of this article is to raise the philosophical question of the subject within the context of contemporary theories of translation in general and that of J-R. Ladmiral and A. Berman in particular. Far from being monolithic, the theoretical treatment of the subject - which designates the abstract function of the translator - displays a certain complexity. Indeed, the subject-translator is either a transcendent being who has internalized the process of translation or a finite being constrained recursively by his decision of translation. It is precisely this "double-game" - which always seems to take place simultaneously - that we will explore.
