Resumen de Urban Design in Wales: Confusions of Policy, Problems of Practice

Peter J. Larkham, Jill Fairweather

  • This paper reviews approaches to urban design in Wales, comparing the guidance issued by the Welsh Office with that from England's Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. A questionnaire survey of all Welsh local planning authorities examining their attitudes towards urban design guidance, particularly their use of design briefs, complements the review of Welsh Office guidance. Shortcomings are suggested in both the guidance and the format of guidance: better practices in England have not always been adopted and adapted for the Welsh context.
