As a technological innovation, the research of nanomaterials requires efforts to foster an adequate public understanding of possibilities, applications, and risks to the human health and the environment. This paper analyses the roles and goals of science communication within the Studies of Science, Technology, and Society and suggests directions to initiatives devoted to the strengthening of citizenship. Our theoretical approach gives support to the proposal of eight categories of information to be adopted as news values according to the democratic model of communication to the nanoscience.
