Resumen de �Writing is a way of knowing�: writing and identity
This theory to practice article introduces writing as a method of enquiry, which assists adult English language learners in the goal-directed activity of completing their Cultural and Linguistic Autobiography (CLA) project, one component of their academic writing course in a community college ESL programme. By focusing on a series of �chapter prompts� completed by the learners coupled with the epilogue chapter of selected students, I highlight the concept of writer identity (i.e. autobiographical self, discoursal self, and self as author) as it relates to the learners� self-assessment of what they had gained from completing the CLA.
