    Actualmente somos testigos de un derrumbamiento del prestigio y autoridad docente. Y si bien son temas que requieren atención por parte de las instituciones y quienes tiene a cargo las políticas educativas; también es necesario encarar un trabajo de reflexión de los mismos educadores para que ellos valoren adecuadamente su profesión y asuman con responsabilidad las exigencias de la tarea educativa. El presente trabajo, intenta abordar la apasionante tarea de enseñar, especialmente en la universidad. Es por ello que en primer lugar se considera el origen y misión de la universidad, como así también su compromiso con la búsqueda de la verdad. En segundo lugar se analiza las implicancias del cultivo del saber, atendiendo especialmente su diversidad y unidad, y el papel de las humanidades en la integración de los diversos saberes. Y finalmente, se reflexionará acerca del valor y carácter de la tarea docente en vistas a la formación integral de los estudiantes universitarios.

    We are currently witnessing the collapse of the teaching authority’s prestige. These issues require attention not only of those who administer educational policies; but also educators themselves in order to properly assess their profession from the complex responsibilities and demands of the educational task. This paper reflects on the importance of being a university professor and the challenges that involve the exercise of it in light of the overall education of students. The implications of the search for truth and the cultivation of teachers’ knowledge in their unit and diversity are analyzed. Finally it is concluded that being a university professor is to consider and rethink the fundamental questions of the truth of being, in the constant search for the perennial and transient in teaching because the educational task is an adventure worthy of existence.
