  • Resumen
    • The intent of this paper is to recapture some of the early pre-Pauling history of electronegativity. In doing so, I hope to remind the modern theorist that those who ignore history always run the risk of repeating it--a cliché, no doubt, but unhappily one that embodies a sizable, albiet depressing, amount of the truth. The subject is approached in three stages. Here in Part I the origins of electronegativity as a qualitative concept in the period between 1809 and 1813 are discussed.
