This demonstration illustrates that acid-base indicators may come in many forms, and further exhibits the reversible effects that acids and bases may have on the colors of such indicators. It is described here in the form in which it was presented during Michigan State University's Chemusical Extravaganza at the ChemEd '93 Conference at Butler University, Indiana. Several variations that are employed by the MSU Science Theatre demonstration group are also discussed.
The demonstration involves the dyeing of an object in an indicator, which causes the object to turn dark blue at pH less than 3.0 to 5.0.
