    Los estudios de durabilidad o vida comercial son fundamentales en el desarrollo de un producto y han de ser cuidadosamente planeados. El enfoque determinista de los mismos se presta a interpretaciones erróneas, como la de creer que la totalidad de las unidades tendrán la durabilidad obtenida en el estudio.

    El enfoque estadístico, para el que la distribución de Weibull suele ser la más adecuada, proporciona información no sólo sobre la durabilidad media sino también sobre la evolución de la proporción de unidades fallidas con el tiempo.

    Shelf-life studies are a critical step in product development and they must be carefully planned. It can be seen quite often that experimental results are not interpreted in probabilistic terms and only one absolute value is given as result. This can easily lead to some misunderstanding, as could be to think that all the units will reach a given amount of degradation in a given period of time.

    In practice, there are always some differences in composition, in processing conditions, in packaging or in the environmental circumstances during the distribution and as a result of it some units show higher degradation rates than others.

    A good experimental design is one of the first precautions to take when a shelf-life study is planed, to adjust the amount of samples and the treatment periodes to the objectives of the study. Regression analysis and plotting to the Weibull distribution can be used as procedures to quantify the relation between the number of failed units and the time elapsed.
