The formation of color in ceramic glazes can often be influenced by the firing conditions. In an oxidative firing, copper ions present give a green-to-blue glaze. Under reduction conditions, the copper ions in the glaze provide a reddish color. Metallic ions with multiple oxidation states thus enable potters to achieve a great variety of colored glazes. Other redox tricks will also be discussed.
