We have developed an electrochemical cell to demonstrate a simple oxygen sensor.
It consists of a small sheet of zinc as the anode, a carbon bar or rod (as available) as the cathode, KOH-bentonite paste (a mixture of potassium hydroxide solution and bentonite clay) as the electrolyte, and some oxygen scavenger. In this simple sensor, a decrease in oxygen concentration caused by the reaction with the oxygen scavenger can be observed as a decrease in cell potential difference. The device can be used to demonstrate the use of electrochemical cells as gas sensors and therefore as a medium to teach an application of electrochemistry.
