884). Come leggere tale dato?
The current norms of the Code manifest a preference for having a bishop administer Confirmation, not excluding the possibility to give the faculty to a priest, but only in cases of need (cf can. 884). How should such element be read? The preparatory works to the Council had placed such reservation as a characteristic of the epis copal authority; the Conciliar debate - having as accomplice also the fact that in the oriental Churches Confirmation was administered also by priests - let go of such perspective; however, the relationship between the bishop and the sacrament of Confirmation was not lost, but was inserted in a wider context of the episcopal munus sanctificandi. In such a sense, the celebration on the part of the bishop - in the light of Conciliar doctrine - manifested the ecclesiastical significance that is attributed in such a sacrament and becomes an expressive moment of the profile of the bishop drawn up by the Council.
