  • This article analyzes the origins of digital pay TV in Spain and, in particular, the configuring of the initial offer in the form of the two original digital satellite platforms, Canal Satélite Digital and Vía Digital, and the causes of their merger in the year 2003. This initial period (1997-2003) is fundamental to understanding part of the limitations of the sole platform which exists at present, Digital+, and also reminds us of some of the challenges to consider in the development of digital pay television in Spain today
