  • Paleontologists study preexisting forms of life through the examination of fossils derived from plants, animals, and other organisms. Oftentimes, paleontologists find only limited fossils and must use science, technology engineering, art, and mathematics to make the best judgment about extinct animals, such as estimating their size. Here, Hunter et al describe how fourth graders from a rural school in the Midwest donned their paleontologist hats to meaningfully engage in reasoning mathematically about scale and to work with measurement in the context of paleontology.
