The engineering aspect of STEM allows for the seamless integration of a variety of subject areas, because it requires students to apply content area knowledge to the problem at hand. An integrated STEM lesson in an elementary school classroom provides an opportunity to actively engage students and demonstrate that solutions to problems are found by using information from several subject areas. STEM content knowledge is used to solve everyday problems that people in the society face. Extending the problems posed in a familiar story can be a nonthreatening way to introduce the foundations of STEM problem solving. Here, Orona et al examine the challenges faced by elementary school teachers in mathematics.
