Borkovitz et al discuss the mathematics and the pedagogy of Clock Buddies, an accessible, engaging problem-solving activity with rich mathematical content. Clock Buddies is the favorite first-day-of-class activity, that helps students learn one another's names and asks students to find their own strategies for solving a real-world scheduling problem. The initial problem, students start with a blank schedule in order to make appointments with different students for each time slot. Students move around the room making appointments, however they were unsuccessful at finding an appointment, so the teacher brings the class and asks for suggestions. Student strategies include whiteboard strategy, but is still using the same random strategy that they used and the Two Lines strategy, wherein class separates into two lines and successfully fill everyone's schedule.
