    The first three novels by Québec author Nicole Brossard, Un livre (1970), Sold-out (1973), French Kiss (1974), form a suite of works that highlight her radical modernity and urbanity. She was a leader in a young and proud generation noisily refusing to conform to debilitating traditions of rural docility. Her style, her innovative strategies for characterization, enunciation and narration, and the stark light she throws on the heart of the modern city of Montréal place her at the forefront of those who wrought the amazing transformation of Québec literature, culture and sociopolitical situation and who revitalized the French language there.
