This paper analyzes the historical-cultural theory in the context of physical education in early childhood education, aiming to verifyits contribution to rethink the concepts of games and playing. Searching for a heuristic reference able to support teachers' work in this area, we study Vygotsky's contribution (1896-1934) to formulating that theory, from what has been revealed by recent and competent translations of his work. The challenge is to establish a parallel between the aforementioned reference and physical education in childhood, recognizing playing and games as main tools for the cognitive-linguistic, affective-relational and motor-expressive child development. These tools also contribute to recreate cultural legacy and, ultimately, humanization itself
