Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often have difficulties in language acquisition, including the intraverbal repertoire. In an intraverbal relation, the response is controlled by a verbal stimulus and by generalized conditioned reinforcers and the generated verbal response does not have point-to-point correspondence with the antecedent verbal stimulus, and response and stimulus may be of different modalities (for example, oral and written) or of the same modality (for example, both oral). Deficits in intraverbal repertoire may be related to the verbal antecedents that, in the majority of intraverbal relations, involve verbal conditional discriminations (VCD), where the response is under the control of two or more verbal antecedents. In the present study, a simple to complex intraverbal relation protocol, originally in English, was translated to Portuguese and applied to determine if there is a general sequence of intraverbal repertoire acquisition. Participants were 26 individuals with ID, 23 with ASD and 30 with typical development. The translated protocol, with 80 questions, was administered individually with each participant. Each question was individually presented and the participant was given a period of time to respond. Every response was recorded in the protocol as told by the participant and, posteriorly, scored as correct or incorrect. The results replicate data previously found and indicate that the performance becomes poorer as the questions become more complex (from simple discriminations to conditional discriminations). There was a correlation between age and performance for participants with ID and with typical development, but not with participants with ASD, which showed great variability. In general, the results obtained by all participants were above 50% of correct responses (40 or more correct responses), indicating a suitable degree of comprehension, expressive verbal repertoire and verbal conditional discriminations of the participants.

Therefore, the protocol, in its Portuguese version, is consistent with the original version because it indicates that the gradual increase of complexity of the questions may represent the gradual acquisition process of intraverbal repertoire.
