Recently the question of accountability and quality assurance in higher education has become aserious matter of concern in Germany, as it happened in various other European States some yearsearlier. Engineering education is being and will be affected in different ways. In addition to qualityassessment based on internal and external evaluation, program accreditation procedures are alsogoing to be implemented very soon, initially applied to newly implemented bachelor and masterdegree programs. These developments have caused a controversial discussion about quality andstandards, assessment procedures to be applied and authorities to be involved. Also raised is thequestion of international comparability and even the possibility of a transnational approach, e.g. aEuropean approach or a European ABET, has started to be on the agenda. This contribution dealswith the discussions and the various approaches of quality assurance in Germany with a focus onEngineering Education, and also refers to the European Union debate on these topics in general.Some examples of good practice from other European States which are further along in this processare described. Current developments as well as probable future perspectives are taken intoconsideration
