This paper describes a pilot project and business case for developing a centre of excellence in Performance Support technology and applications at Bell‐Northern Research Ltd (BNR).
After providing a background in performance support, the paper describes a five‐phase project leading to the planned centre of excellence. The fourth phase, development of a pilot system, is outlined. The pilot is a Unix‐based performance support system (PSS) providing on‐line training and information for a software configuration management system. Finally, the business case is described in some detail, including an analysis of costs, benefits, and risks.
BNR's approach to performance support emphasizes the integration of a PSS with a product. Thus, for BNR, a PSS is not stand‐alone, but part of a product.
