This contribution investigates the appropriateness of the word ‘design’ in ‘instructional design’. Using a framework developed by Lawson (1980), the conclusion is reached that instructional designers are truly engaged in a design activity. The implications of this for the continuing debate on the nature of instructional design and for the professional development of instructional designers are also presented.
