    • The aim of this paper is to highlight the need for a structured response to the needs of industry from training and education and to suggest that the providers of such training, in the area of advanced manufacturing technology, need to employ both traditional and modern methods of delivery and support through the medium of continuing education This paper argues that there is a need for a structured response from the traditional providers of training and education, whether they be vocationally based or academically based This will involve a flexible approach to such provision comprising the traditional methods of formal courses and training and more modern methods involving the use of open learning material, distance learning, and multimedia methods such as interactive video, CBT and expert systems Training also needs to be more closely linked to skill needs which implies a clear recognition of skill shortages that are evident at the present and also those shortages that are likely to occur through the introduction of advanced manufacturing and related technologies This further implies that such training will require the close association of industry to the universities and polytechnics Using the example of the five institutions in the East Midlands, the paper will address these and related issues
