During the last two years I have been fortunate in having assisted the National Educational Resources Information Service (NERIS) with the development work which has led to the delivery of graphic materials on the national on‐line curriculum database. With this background in mind the monitoring in this issue focuses on the increasing role that on‐line information retrieval systems are playing in all levels of education and training
