The development of alternative forms of learner support may seem to reduce the role of the resource centre within open learning. In part, this is because the definition of ‘support’ has been widely interpreted as support from teaching staff. There are, however, forms of resource centre support for open learning which remain understated. In addition to administrative support, resource centres can and do increasingly provide active learner support for the implementation of open learning. This paper identifies the forms of support provided by resource centres and proposes that support from a resource centre can be viewed at three levels: infrastructural, participative and developmental. Finally, the author considers some strategies for increasing support from the resource centre.
