This paper discusses some ideas about the social contexts in which interactive learning media are used. It draws (anecdotally, rather than systematically) on research carried out under the aegis of the National Foundation for Educational Research, but does not in any way represent the policies or opinions of that organization. It is argued that we need to concentrate on the role of technology as an element in a complex web of social interactions, rather than as a direct stimulus to individual student activity.
