Computer‐aided Language Learning with Speech Synthesis:: User Reactions

  • Initial reactions from staff and students suggest that the potential for combining speech synthesis and computer‐aided learning (CAL) in teaching modern languages is considerable. For such systems to be successful, however, teaching staff must be provided with easy to use tools so that modules of teaching material can be re‐shaped and personalized to fit naturally into the teacher's own scheme. This paper reports experience with a flexible Multifacet Language Laboratory environment, using optical character‐reading techniques to input initial material and incorporating speech synthesis and interactive video. The system was used for exploring Spanish grammatical constructs and for working through associated exercises. The response from students has been enthusiastic while staff feedback, although more cautious, is also encouraging.
