  • In this Journal (24, 3, 1987 % background), Parkes has suggested a description for pictures in a visual database. While his work is a major contribution to describing computer‐controlled pictures in CBT, it raises some problems with regard to the linguistic underpinning, and his use of the term ‘understanding’ to describe the supervisory system. This paper criticizes his use of the linguistic parallel of morphemes and suggests a more rigorous denotation to the concept ‘understanding’ with regard to the supervisory program.
