Resumen de Using Media in Post‐compulsory Education in the United Kingdom and the United States

David Hawkridge

  • This paper is concerned with different approaches that have been employed, in the United Kingdom and the United States, in the development and use of media for post‐compulsory education during the last ten years.

It draws upon examples from both countries to illustrate and discuss differences in three areas: (a) auricular planning for media‐based post‐compulsory education, (b) access to broadcasting and other media, and (c) relationships between media‐based and conventional post‐compulsory institutions.

The examples include the Open University, the National Extension College and BBC Further Education in the United Kingdom; and the University of Mid‐America, the California Educational Television Consortium and Stanford University's Instructional Television Fixed Service in the United States.

The paper raises a number of questions for discussion and was first presented at the University of Lancaster, 4th International Conference on Higher Education, 29 August — 1 September 1978.
