This paper comprises a summary of some of the basic concepts and works of those concerned with the topic of programmed instruction. Though this field, under the label of programmed instruction, is relatively new, its concept of attention to the individual to the end of establishing a learning environment must in all fairness be traced at least to the time of Socrates. This represents a sizeable omission with respect to time. The omission with respect to quality of contribution within that span may never be ascertained.
