The subject of this paper is Aktionsart, referred to in Spanish as “modo de acción”, “cualidad de la acción” or “accionalidad” (RAE, 2010: §23.1.3b). Knowledge of this concept is important because it explains many differences between Spanish and Italian in various grammatical frameworks, such as the use of non-argumental clitic pronouns, the passive voice, subordinate phrases and verbal periphrasis. This article is only a general conspectus I limit myself to a demonstration of the fields where Aktionsart is useful in explaining certain differences between Spanish and Italian grammar.
