  • Resumen
    • Tourism has become a key economic development strategy for many jurisdictions worldwide. Whereas the economic benefits of tourism have received much study, social impacts are infrequently discussed. Research shows that tourism development has a variety of negative social impacts. However, social impact studies are conducted at only one point in time whereas tourism is a dynamic phenomenon, with destinations increasing and decreasing in popularity. Monitoring of tourism impacts — systematic and periodic measurement of key variables — is rarely conducted except for economic impacts. This article reports the results of a social impact monitoring program designed to give forewarning of changes in attitudes. The results show that although overall attitudes remained constant, increasing negative attitudes toward overcrowding due to tourism and its impact on quality of life occurred over the 4 years reported here. The results also suggest important seasonality effects.
