    A principios de los tiempos modernos, para las potencias europeas era necesario disponer de una serie de fiables y leales traductores y mediadores lingüísticos (intérpretes) de lenguas de Oriente. En este artículo se examinará la formación y el estatus de los mismos utilizando el ejemplo de los Sprachknaben (Giovanni di lingua - Enfants de Langues - Jóvenes de lenguas) en las respectivas embajadas en Constantinopla. En los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII, en vista de la amenaza que representaba la Sublime Puerta, fue de crucial importancia para todos los estados de Occidente obtener el conocimiento más claro posible de los territorios y las culturas del dominio de la Sublime Puerta, aunque para la monarquía española estas relaciones con Constantinopla eran de interés secundario.

    At the beginning of the modern period it was necessary for all European powers to have a number of reliable and loyal translators and linguistics mediators (interpreters) in their relationship with the Ottoman Empire. In this article, the training and position of these people shall be examined using the example of the Sprachknaben (Giovanni di lingua - Enfants de Langues - Jóvenes de lenguas) at the respective embassies in Constantinople. In the 16th, 17th and 18th century, in view of the imminent threat posed by the Sublime Porte, it was of crucial importance for all European States to acquire the clearest possible knowledge of the areas and cultures of the domain of the Sublime Porte, even though for the Spanish monarchy the relations with Constantinople were of secondary interest.

    Für alle europäischen Mächte war es zu Beginn der Neuzeit notwendig, über eine Reihe zuverlässiger und loyaler Übersetzer und Sprachmittler (Dolmetscher) für das Osmanische Reich zu verfügen. In diesem Beitrag soll die Ausbildung und Stellung derselben untersucht werden und zwar am Beispiel der Sprachknaben (Giovanni di lingua - Enfants de Langues - Jóvenes de lenguas) an den jeweiligen Botschaften in Konstantinopel. Im 16., 17. und 18. Jahrhundert war es angesichts der unmittelbaren Bedrohung durch die Hohe Pforte für alle Staaten des Abendlandes von entscheidender Bedeutung, möglichst klare Kenntnisse über die Gebiete und Kulturen des Herrschaftsbereichs der Hohen Pforte zu erlangen, obwohl für die spanische Monarchie die Beziehungen zu Konstantinopel eher von zweitrangigem Interesse waren.
