    El cuerpo es el instrumento de la bailarina. Ciertas caraterística anatómicas y morfológicas son indispensables para el óptimo desarrollo de la técnica, que exige un entrenamietno físico similar al de las deportistas de élite. Sin embargo, algunas demandaspueden atentar contra su integridad física y mental.

    La imagen de la bailarina ideal ha cambiado notablemente, aunque la imposición de una delgadez extrema se produce en la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Este modelo frágil puede quebrantar el desarrollo del cuerpo femenino, respondiendo a gustos estéticos que reflejan cuestiones sociales y de poder más profundas. La ausencia de coreógrafas y directoras en las grandes compañías de ballet silencia la voz de la mujer sobre su propio cuerpo. El siglo XXI apuesta por mayor diversidad corporal y étnica, incoporando además a la mujer en estructuras de poder del mundo del ballet.

    The body is the ballerina's instrument. Some anatomical and morphological characteristics are required to achieve technical development, which demans a physical training similar to that of elite athletes. However, some requirements may work agaisnt her physical and mental integrity.

    The ballerina's ideal image has changed notably, though the imposition of a extreme thinness is produced in the second half of the twentieth century. This model of fragility runscounter to a fully developed woman's body, in favor of an aesthetic taste that reflects deeper social and power issues. The lack of women in charge of the big ballet companies and in choreography silences the women's voice over her own body. The 21st century is the time for bigger corporal and ethnic diversity, and to include women in the power structures in the world of ballet.
