    La Maison et Musée Victor Hugo, à Paris, conserve les archives de François-Victor Hugo (1828-1873), premier traducteur français des oeuvres complètes de Shakespeare. On ne saurait exagérer le succès et l’importance historique de cette traduction, publiée entre 1857 et 1865 (en dix-huit volumes) et régulièrement rééditée de nos jours. En plus de la correspondance et des carnets de Hugo fils, les archives contiennent les brouillons de la traduction de trois tragédies et de six sonnets de Shakespeare. Après un portrait du traducteur dans son contexte historique, social et familial, une lecture de quelques documents d’archive – lettres, souvenirs, traduction des sonnets 1, 2 et 19 – permettra de montrer François-Victor Hugo au travail en examinant ses manuscrits, ses dictionnaires et ses ratures.

    The Maison et Musée Victor Hugo in Paris holds the archives of François-Victor Hugo (1828-1873), the first translator into French of the complete works of Shakespeare. The success and historical significance of this translation, published between 1857 and 1865 (in eighteen volumes) and regularly republished today, cannot be overstated. In addition to the correspondence and notebooks, the archive contains drafts of the translation of three tragedies and six sonnets by Shakespeare. After situating the translator in his historical, social, and family context, the article examines a number of archival documents, including letters, his dictionaries, and the translation drafts of sonnets 1, 2, and 19, to shed light on François-Victor Hugo’s translation process.
