La polaridad de la evaluación en el discurso científico en inglés: Comparación de usos entre escritores expertos y principiantes

    En este trabajo, estudiamos Artículos de Investigación Científica (AIC) en inglés sobre física, química, bioquímica, geología y matemática desde los postulados de la Lingüística Sistémico Funcional (Halliday y Matthiessen, 2014), y en este marco, del Sistema de la VALORACIÓN (Martin y White, 2005). Nuestro objetivo es comparar los usos que hacen escritores expertos (EE) y principiantes (EP) de la polaridad positiva y negativa al evaluar entidades como el objeto de estudio, la metodología y los resultados en los AIC. Para este fin, se construyó un corpus de 30 AIC, dividido en 15 escritos por EE y 15 por EP. Los textos se analizaron cualitativa y manualmente, con la asistencia de un software de marcado. Se identificaron las instancias de ACTITUD, su polaridad y las entidades evaluadas. Tanto EE como EP evalúan positivamente y en proporciones similares las entidades analizadas. Sin embargo, encontramos diferencias entre los grupos para la polaridad negativa. Los EE evalúan sus resultados negativamente con más frecuencia que los EP, mientras que los EP evalúan más frecuentemente el objeto de estudio de manera negativa que los EE. Estos hallazgos contribuyen a la descripción del género AIC y a las formas en que EE y EP construyen su posicionamiento e identidad en el discurso científico.

    In this work, we study Scientific Research Articles (SRA) in English on physics, chemistry, biochemistry, geology and mathematics considering the tenets of Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2014), and within this framework, those of the System of Appraisal (Martin and White, 2005). Our objective is to compare the uses of positive and negative polarity that expert (EW) and novice (NW) writers make when evaluating entities such as the object of study, the methodology and the results in the SRA. For this purpose, a corpus of 30 SRA was built, divided into 15 texts written by EW and 15 by NW. The texts were analyzed qualitatively and manually, with the assistance of a tagging software. Instances of Attitude, their polarity and evaluated entities were identified. Both EW and NW use positive polarity in similar proportions to evaluate entities. However, we found differences between the groups for negative polarity. EW evaluate their results negatively more frequently than NW, while NW evaluate the object of study negatively more frequently than EW. These findings contribute to the description of the SRA as a genre and to the ways in which EW and NW construct their position and identity in scientific discourse.
