    Escribir una autobiografía supone siempre un ejercicio de memoria selectiva que delata el deseo de querer dejar testimonio, contar la propia verdad o explicar el porqué de las derivas de un trayecto vital. Un esfuerzo de síntesis con el que se deja poco margen para futuras interpretaciones especulativas al respecto de intenciones vitales o profesionales. En las memorias de la arquitecta Charlotte Perriand discurren ciertos de los acontecimientos arquitectónicos de la modernidad en Francia acontecidos durante gran parte del s. XX, pero contemplados desde un punto de vista personal.

    La emergencia de una nueva domesticidad ligada al vocabulario arquitectónico moderno supuso una oportunidad para el desarrollo de una creatividad singular y continuamente activa, que había sido fomentada desde unos primeros aprendizajes vinculados a las escuelas de arte aplicadas de París. La historiografía de la arquitectura describe, analiza e intenta comprender aportaciones individuales o colectivas de una manera objetiva, comparando y clasificando. Sin embargo, una autobiografía expone una verdad individual que se atiene a la realidad, aunque reinterpretada a través de la memoria subjetiva. En este texto se invita a rescatar la voz subjetiva de mujeres, como Charlotte Perriand, que entendieron su trabajo como una autoafirmación de su propia libertad. Y que frente a la adquisición únicamente de prestigio profesional se comprometieron, desde la disciplina arquitectónica, en la mejora técnico-social de su propio tiempo. Un compromiso desarrollado a través de un oficio que transitó desde lo artesanal del detalle material hasta lo conceptual y paisajístico del proyecto arquitectónico, pero siempre procurando crear espacios para un bienestar que invitara a disfrutar aquello que ella denominaba “el arte de habitar”.

    Writing an autobiography always involves an exercise in selective memory that reveals the desire to leave testimony, tell one’s own truth or explain the reasons for the drifts of a life journey. An effort at synthesis that leaves little room for future speculative interpretations regarding vital or professional intentions. In the memoirs of the architect Charlotte Perriand, some of the architectural events of modernity in France that occurred during much of the 20th century take place, but seen from a personal point of view. The emergence of a new domesticity linked to the modern architectural vocabulary represented an opportunity for the development of a singular and continuously active creativity, which had been fostered from early learning linked to the applied art schools of Paris. The historiography of architecture describes, analyzes and tries to understand individual or collective contributions in an objective way, comparing and classifying. However, an autobiography exposes an individual truth that adheres to reality, although reinterpreted through subjective memory. This text invites us to rescue the subjective voice of women, like Charlotte Perriand, who understood her work as a self-affirmation of her own freedom. And that, faced with the acquisition of only professional prestige, she committed herself, from the architectural discipline, to the technical-social improvement of her own time. A commitment developed through a craft that ranged from the craftsmanship of the material detail to the conceptual and landscape aspects of the architectural project, but always seeking to create spaces for well-being that invited us to enjoy what she called “the art of living”.
