Resumen
In the Romanian language, stress that is, (the stronger or higher-pitched utterance of a syllable in a word or of a word in a phrase or a sentence is free. Usually, with very few exceptions, within the nominal inflection stress maintains its position in the root while within the verbal inflection it is generally mobile. Stress can play a phonological role (tórturi vs. tortúri, apláuda vs. aplauda). The present study investigates the current norms applicable to the pronunciation of certain words which sometimes stipulate the more emphatic pronunciation of some syllables (ostróv, taxí), or allow the free stress variation some other times (íntim and intím, rólfilm and rolfílm). The study also includes references to the syntactic and graphic stress, as well as to the primary and secondary stress.
