    Al igual que en otros países hispanoamericanos, la guerra civil de España (1936-1939) suscitó intensas pasiones en la vida política e intelectual de Ecuador.1 Cinco años de vida republicana habían convertido a la antigua madre patria en un espejo donde podían verse reflejados muchos de los temores y aspiraciones de las repúblicas americanas. En ese espejo, trizado por la guerra, miraban y se miraban, espantados y esperanzados, políticos, intelectuales y amplios sectores de la sociedad ecuatoriana, movilizados como nunca en un contexto político, nacional e internacional, de extrema agitación. La repercusión de la guerra civil en la sociedad y la intelectualidad ecuatorianas permite comprender el alcance de esta movilización y la intensidad de los renovados vínculos con España.

    Like other Latin-American countries, the Spanish civil war (19361939) gave rise to intense passions in the political and intellectual life in Ecuador. Five years of republican life had converted our old mother country into a mirror where many of the fears and ambitions of the American republics were reflected. In this mirror which was broken by the war, frightened and hopeful politicians, intellectuals and large groups of the Ecuadorian society watched and watched themselves and the others as they were mobilized as never before in a national and international political context of extreme unrest. The impact of the war on the Ecuadorian civil society and on the intellectuals allows us to understand the implications of this mobilization and the intensity of the renewed links with Spain.
