High-altitude populations are supposed to be adapted to the extreme environmental conditions of the ecosystems where they live. With the goal of diving into how this environment affect their inhabitants' morphology, somatotype in an Andean high altitude population has been analysed for first time. This study was carried out in Susques, a village located at 3675 m in the Argentinean Andean plateau, province of Jujuy. BMI, fat distribution and somatoype, following the Heath-Carter method, of 438 school-children between 6 and 19 years old were calculated. Sexual dimorphism and most important somatotype changes occur parallel to sexual maduration. Females ar more endomorphic since 13 years old and males are more mesomorphic during puberal ages. In this stage, children show a relatively high values of linearity whose adaptative character in a high-altitude ecosysteme is discussed.
