Importancia que le atribuyen a las Matemáticas los estudiantes de grado en su formación académico profesional

    Este artículo trata de la importancia que los estudiantes de Administración de Empresas de la Universidad Laica Vicente Rocafuerte de Guayaquil atribuyen a las Matemáticas y su relación con su utilidad. Las innumerables aplicaciones de las Matemáticas al parecer no son del todo conocidas o asimiladas por los estudiantes. El tema de su importancia se ve influenciado por prejuicios, mitos, la cultura, etc. Se utilizaron como técnicas de investigación la encuesta y la entrevista. Se realizó una prueba piloto con 50 estudiantes de último nivel y se obtuvo un Alfa de Cronbach de 0.81. El estudio fue de carácter longitudinal. En su inicio los alumnos no le atribuían importancia significativa a la Matemática en su formación. Al participarles de sus aplicaciones e insistiendo en las mismas por casi 3 meses, se reflejó un cambio en la importancia atribuida por ellos. En una entrevista realizada a 3 catedráticos se recuerdan las aplicaciones de las Matemáticas, desde algoritmos para determinar la ruta crítica entre 2 puntos remotos hasta aquellos que permiten mejorar la nitidez de imágenes médicas de radiografías; modelos representando distintas situaciones reales, etc. Como conclusiones, se verifica el supuesto de que los estudiantes desconocen muchos aspectos de esta ciencia y a pesar de cursar un contenido introductorio, si no se hace hincapié al respecto, afirman “Las Matemáticas no se usan”; participarles a los estudiantes sobre la utilidad de las Matemáticas permite mejorar el grado de atención que estos le atribuyan. Se sugiere modelar fenómenos reales explotando la tecnología existente.

    This article deals with the importance that Business Administration students at the Vicente Rocafuerte Lay University of Guayaquil attribute to Mathematics and its relationship with its usefulness. The innumerable applications of Mathematics apparently are not fully known or assimilated by students. The issue of its importance is influenced by prejudices, myths, culture, etc. The survey and interview were used as research techniques. A pilot test was carried out with 50 final level students and a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.81 was obtained. The study was longitudinal in nature. At the beginning, students did not attribute significant importance to Mathematics in their training. By participating in their applications and insisting on them for almost 3 months, a change was reflected in the importance attributed by them. In an interview with 3 professors, the applications of Mathematics are recalled, from algorithms to determine the critical path between 2 remote points to those that allow improving the sharpness of medical images of x-rays; models representing different real situations, etc. As conclusions, the assumption is verified that students are unaware of many aspects of this science and despite taking introductory content, if emphasis is not placed on it, they affirm "Mathematics is not used"; Involving students in the usefulness of Mathematics allows them to improve the degree of attention they attribute to it. It is suggested to model real phenomena by exploiting existing technology.
